Why F1's 2022 Wheels are Slower but Better

Thanks to Shell’s Pennzoil for sponsoring this video. Head on over to bit.ly/DonutMed to learn more about their new synthetic motor oil made from natural gas!

If you have been keeping up with the new regulations coming to F1 in 2022, one of the most visually obvious changes is in the wheels. What's with those slim sidewalls? Or that convex hub? And what the hell are those little wings over the tires???

    Thomas AndersonThomas AndersonКүн мурун
  • So the mass of a wheel only goes to the rim. Tyres are weightless. Cool. So in theory they could reduce rims to just a hub and all other diameter would be rim so there would be no unsprung mass at all since tyre weight nothing. That is what I learned from this video. Everyday something new. Before this video I had wrong perception why drag race cars and F1 and similar have such small rims. I had false thoughts that real reason is to tyre deform more on acceleration and give larger area of contact vs very stiff low profile tyre ... but now I know I was wrong ... no such thing. Drag race cars with giant half empty balloons are such just for weight. :)

If it wasn't for this, Carbon/Ceramic brakes wouldn't exist...... I am interested in the 2022 F1 brake rules........ if they still only have to fit within the new 18" wheel, then they are about to have 33% more brakes...............

  • The current fat tire gives a huge amount of grip, but when it goes over that line it just snaps loose and it is pretty much impossible to correct. I think the smaller sidewall lets the car slide just a bit more, but it will be easier for the drivers to correct it. Less tire deformation makes the car more predictable.

    • Most of the snappiness of an F1 car comes from the yaw sensitivity of the aero package. They downforce drops off rapidly when the car isn't going straight through the air.

  • less sidewall lower pressure? isn't one of the arguments againsts low profile tyres that one would need to run them at higher pressures? Less air volume inside the tyre and less deflection range/sidewall means the tyre will have to run at higher pressure per given load, resulting in less grip. the aero aspect and the more controllable behaviour of the wheel-tyre assembly is what makes them a good option for 2022, with teams already going crazy with simulators. It could be a welcome cost cutting measure. Besides more manufacturers are happy to provide 18 inch tyres, for marketing reasons I would assume. what most F1 fans agree on is that so little sidewall on a F1 car looks stupid. the argument of making them look more relevant is also stupid, who would put Corolla wheels on a formula car?

Larger brakes and more precise steering due to less tire deflection seem to be a couple but they seem to have been doing ok for the last 50 years or so...

  • 1. F1 has minimal total car weight. An increase in wheel weight can be offset elsewhere. 2. Increase in the alloy part of the wheel is offset by less rubber on the wheel. To an extent. Plus the stiffer sidewall benefits. 3. Less sidewall will result in a better suspension tune that will affect handling overall. 4. Larger wheel allows for a larger brake rotor. Provides potential for improvements in braking.

    Bolsonaro 2022Bolsonaro 20227 күн мурун
  • You may have missed two additional factors that will impact aerodynamics and also help slow down the car. 1. With wider tires sizes and larger diameters, the frontal area (or total cross-section area) of the car will increase a little, which translates to a higher drag coefficient. 2. The larger wheels without any smooth covers will also increase the drag on all wheels. Those are potentially small differences but compounded to everything else in the video.
