Why North Carolina Wants to Ban This Truck Mod

Thanks to The Zebra for sponsoring today’s video. Click bit.ly/TheZebraWheelhouse to learn everything you ever wanted to know about car insurance.

The Carolina Squat. Cali Lean. Tennessee Tilt. All names for the most controversial car trend since "Stance". One state wants to put an end to the trend of lifting the front end of pickup trucks. North Carolina house bill 692 is slated to make squatted trucks, and its probably gonna work. But how? I've got some questions about this bill. I don't think it's as simple as it appears.

  • In retrospect, I wish I used a full sized truck for our test, the results would have been more dramatic and reflected real world trends better, as squatted trucks are usually full sized. After reading your comments, it sounds like the headlights on these trucks have the biggest effect on other drivers, and do not sound like something I'd want to drive around. If you want to track of HB 692's progress through the NC house legislature you can use this link right here: www.ncleg.gov/BillLookUp/2021/H692 As of June 30th the bill was re-referred to the senate committee on rules and operations. I expect HB 692 to become law later this summer.

    • I'm late to this party, but if the North Carolina legislature is like the Florida legislature you should be able to look online at the bill history and see each committee meeting House Bill 692 went through. Florida live streams and archives the committee meetings. If North Carolina does, too, you can watch the Highway Patrol give their public testimony. Edit: The NC Senate adopted a Committee Substitute for HB692 on June 30. Unfortunately, while they seem to live stream their committee meetings, they appear to only archive the House chamber sessions and even then only audio.

    • @A A 6 inch at the front suspension only will raise the front suspension 6 inches but the front end (where the lights are) by 7.5 inches. because you aren't raising the back you're tilting the whole vehicle. Think of it like a right angle triangle, where the 2 longer sides are the wheelbase with and without the lift, and the short side is the 6 inch lift. Now draw lines that extend those longer sides out to where the front of the truck is, the short side of this bigger triangle is 7.5 inches. Rewriting that, a right triangle with a small angle of 2.4 degrees and a short side of 6 inches has long sides of about 145 inches (wheel base of an f150), change that short side to 7.5 inches but keep the angle the same and you get about 175 inches, which gives you about 30 inches which is the extra length from the front suspension to headlights.

    • Yeah there is a lot wrong with squatting. Most are chevy 2500s and Tahoes. You ruin the handling, you can't tow with it, your blinding everyone in front of you. It messes with breaking. If you rear-end Amy regular cars like convertibles and such, you gonna end up on top other and potentially killing them all. Its a problem. And it's ugly.

  • With the front lifted that high and the ass end dragging like that, then the front end has to be lighter going around curves and on wet roads have more of a tendency to slide. I would be horrified to ride a motorcycle around those squatted trucks, they can’t see you at red lights and could run you over. I think they should make this a nationwide ban. If the government can outlaw 3 wheeler atv’s, this shouldn’t be a problem.

  • I'll say my opinion, and that's all it is, my opinion, and that is that it looks stupid. There, I said it. Now, from a different stand point away from looks, when people squat their trucks, the don't adjust their headlights. I've been blinded by excessively bright headlights because they're no longer aimed at a downward factory angle and are pointed directly in the eyes of the oncoming driver. This is the major safety issue that I see. The next is not seeing far enough ahead of you. Now here's the next issue, if you contact your truck manufacturer (assuming you have a new truck) it will void your factory warranty. Just like the extended wheels did back in the 80's and early 90's. However, I don't think they should ban this. Maybe limit it, but not ban. Put requirements like adjusting the headlights which could be a ticket-able offence. Now here's the truth of it, just like the extend wheels, it's just a fad and it will go away eventually. Teenagers and teen wanna-be's will find something new to do to their trucks and they'll stop squatting them. Who knows, maybe the next fad will be removing your tires and attaching hover boards. So, even though I think it's stupid looking, that's no reason to ban it all together. At least, not without real statistical safety issue support.

  • Can you imagine how bad an accident would be if the bumper alignment was allowed to be off enough where a bumper now aligns directly with a passenger compartment? This negates this safety requirements that have been built into these vehicles for years. That would go for hitting one of these in the rear or them hitting some other vehicle at a normal height.

    Troy BuiltTroy Built2 күн мурун
  • Do any of the same restrictions apply to lifted trucks? Most of the safety issues are comparable. The only difference I see is in theory lifting has a "practical" purpose whereas squatting is purely aesthetics.

    jaymathewjaymathew2 күн мурун
  • I believe the trend actually started with the lowrider crowd. My anecdotal evidence for this is knowing several that would ride around squatted so that they could show off that they had a truck on hydraulics. Leaning in any other direction was uncomfortable and made it even harder to drive than it was already. Plus, some would add magnesium strips to the rear to throw sparks without actually dragging the vehicle itself. Like a lot of accidental trends, what starts as one thing leads to another. There were a lot more squatted lowriders than partial lift/lowered trucks, though I don't doubt they also contributed to the trend. As far as making it illegal just because some THINKS it is stupid, oh yea. Happens all the time.

  • NHTSA Crash compatibility explained: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crash_incompatibility The recommendations require all manufacturers to either (a) lower the height of the primary structure (also called frame rail) of all SUV and pickup trucks so that they overlap the primary structure of the cars; or (b) add another structure (called Secondary Energy Absorbing Structure) to the SUVs and pickup truck that cannot meet the first option. There’s no bumper structure overlap with the bumper of a passenger car on an extremely squatted truck. Anecdotal, empirical, experimental data or evidence don’t necessarily have to exist in the legislating state. Most of these rules are imposed on manufacturers of vehicles, and like exhaust in some cases, an owner cannot modify them based on the laws of their jurisdiction if they require emissions testing, for example. If these vehicles are modified out of spec, federal laws can hold the shop or hobbyist responsible for any unlawful changes. There is data, but it’s at a federal and not state level. It’s frequently provided by manufacturers, universities and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and in the case of emissions, the EPA. You’ll see shops fined out of existence most commonly, for removing diesel emissions controls. Individuals are fined or sued as well, but only if they attract attention-doing it to their daily driver isn’t as impactful as doing a few trucks a week. Crash compatibility isn’t yet as large of an issue as emissions, but they can use similar mechanisms to levy penalties, or force them to be “off-road only,” and towed on a trailer.

  • With the bumper raised, they become no longer crash-compatible with other passenger vehicles. If the axles break and the wheels fly off, the rest of the truck can cause severe head injury if not death for occupants of a car they might have rear-ended-as the remainder of the truck slides over the roof.

Also, where as California had the lifted low rider squat thing first, the Carolina squat started with guys turning the torsion bars up on their Chevys. Why do you think it's mostly Chevys, it's the torsion bars. It became a thing and people started taking it to the extreme. People complain about them because all the guys that drive extreme squatted trucks are douches. Why? Their trucks are loud, not good loud but annoyingly loud, and the headlights blind you. These guys try too hard to get people to look at them, and they don't care if they offend you. It's the same reason limp bizkit got hate back in the day.

Also, it would be very hard to point the headlights in the proper direction so other drivers get blinded by their lights is probably the most complaints theyre getting lol. but I do agree theres no empirical evidence and the same can be said about lowered cars being able to slide under a tractor trailer's collision bar.

Obviously it wasn't as extreme then with a '57 Chevy Bel Air or a mid to late 60s Nova as it is today with trucks, but the basics are still there; raise the front and lower the rear. It looked kinda cool with a Bel Air though. Unfortunately, they don't make suitable passenger cars to pull it off, but there also aren't any trucks that can pull it off either lol. It probably wouldn't be so bad on a truck if it wasn't done so extreme. Personally, I don't think 3 up and 2 down would look too bad; but 6 and 6? No. Just no.
