Thanks to Richard at EF1 Tuning for helping us out with this video! Go find out how many horses your car is repping at

Is it better to rip out your rear seats and throw on carbon fiber body panels, or skip over trying to be light and go straight to making your engine more buff? HP to weight ratio is always talked about when trying to make your ride go faster, but what are the limits to this? Well today, we are going to look at what happens when you get to light, and what happens to you car when you get too buff. Which one is better? Let's go.

  • When you state something as a ratio the first term is the numerator and the second term is the denominator. If a new toy has a high “fun:price ratio” then you’re getting lots of fun for a small price. A car with a high power:weight ratio is a fast car.

  • I owned a classic red Peugeot 205 1.9 GTI in the late 90’s while at university, very much a small light weight car purely for driving very fast with little in the way of safety to concern yourself with, but what a great car. Unfortunately as with many 205 1.9 GTI owners I ended up righting it off, but still managed to sell it for a decent price to someone who wanted it as a donor car for his own 205. I digress, it was a lot faster from a standing point than a lot of supposedly faster cars that eventually passed me at top end, once I got to around 70-80 MPH. From London, UK.

  • Haven’t started watching this clip pauses before the ad finished….. the Mini Cooper the real one in the 60’s destroyed everything because it could corner yes it got it ass handed to it in the straight but it ain’t nascar it’s a race with turns, so yeah a 800kg car with 140hp hatch will smash a 5 litre v8 in a circuit with tight corners watch the old races with the Mini Cooper it was against v8’s 6’ other 4’s and it won like 3 years in a row I think or 2 in a row and then another 1 2 years later….. not to mention the tyres will last longer the fuel will last longer because a 5 litre v8 uses more then a 1.4 litre obviously

  • The argumentation for the part about breaking isn't correct. Theoretically the weight of the car doesn't come into the equation (assuming equal weight distributions of the cars). What was proven bythe experiment is just the difference between static and dynamic coefficient of friction: the Yaris has ABS and thereby breaks with static friction, the other car doesn't seem to have ABS and thereby breaks with dynamic friction in this test, with the tires slipping on the road.

  • Actually, the downward force of gravity has no affect on your ability to accelerate beyond increasing your grip on the road. What you're really working against is your inertia. An object floating through space has no weight, but it still has mass and thus, inertia. You still have to overcome that inertia, even when weightless.
